isle of anglesey

Unspoilt beaches. Wetlands, farmland, great sea cliffs. Spectacular coastline within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Isle of Anglesey is a unique part of North Wales.
But as well as prehistoric sites and historic monuments, there’s also plenty of golfing heritage.
Some of the earliest golf courses in Wales are to be found here: Anglesey, Bull Bay and Holyhead Golf Clubs were all founded in the early 1900’s and Baron Hill is the oldest having survived since the late 1880’s. Not that they’ve always had an easy run of it. Holyhead saw their membership reduced from 70 to 10 just ten days after opening in 1914 thanks to World War 1 breaking out. Anglesey Golf Club ‘lost’ 14 of its original holes to the Royal Air Force in 1943. Thankfully for us, they built 14 new ones later.
The Isle of Anglesey’s courses often put you perilously close to the Irish Sea, so conditions can be challenging. Not to mention bracing. But they’re always a pleasure – played out against a stunning backdrop of mountains and sea.
